The company is holding a public consultation meeting on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th February at the Parish Centre in Cirencester - two minutes walk from Cirencester Marketplace, and just behind the Cotswold Living furniture shop - to speak with local residents about retirement villages, listen to their views about what they might want to see in a new Richmond Village, and gauge the need and demand for such a facility in the Cirencester area.
A Richmond village provides a range of accommodation options for the retired, together with high quality leisure, recreation, care and support services. Facilities normally include a restaurant, café, wellness spa including pool, gym and treatment rooms, library, arts & crafts room, IT suite, bowling green and landscaped gardens.
And as well as enhancing the accommodation and care provision within a local community, a Richmond village also creates employment opportunities for around 100 full and part time local people.
The event will be hosted by directors and staff of Richmond Villages, and light refreshments will be available. The meeting is open to all local people who might be interested.

Background information
Demographics – a growing and ageing society
The 65+ age group currently numbers just over 10 million people and accounts for 16.6% of the UK’s total population. By 2035 the over 65s are predicted to account for 23% of the population. The over 85 population is expected to grow even faster to twice the size of the current 1.37 million people.
Within a 20 minute drive time of Cirencester there are currently 10,927 people over the age of 65, which represents 18.9% of the population. Over the next 25 years this figure is predicted to grow by 46% to around 16,000 people.
Today’s older generation has different expectations and aspirations in respect of lifestyle, services, security and accommodation. Retirement should be a rewarding and enjoyable time of life, and purpose built retirement communities such as those at a Richmond village create an environment designed to meet the needs and aspirations of older people.
Other Richmond Villages in the area
As part of the consultation process, the company is also encouraging people to visit one of the company’s existing villages and experience Richmond first hand. The nearest villages are:
Richmond Painswick
Situated on the southern slopes of scenic Painswick and in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Richmond Painswick was fully opened in 2007.
Built of local Cotswold stone, the village has won a number of national awards including the What House? Awards and the Daily Mail Awards for the Best UK Retirement Development.
Accommodation comprises a 24 bedroom nursing home, 41 village centre apartments and 18 village apartments.
As well as the normal facilities such as restaurant, library and café, Richmond Painswick was the first Richmond village to include a wellness spa. This wonderful facility includes a 16m pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, treatment rooms and hair salon.

Richmond Letcombe Regis
Richmond’s newest and largest village, Richmond Letcombe Regis, near Wantage, Oxfordshire, was officially opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex in June 2010.
The village is now seen as the benchmark for retirement villages, and has been recognised by winning a number of major awards including the What House? Awards and the Evening Standard New Homes Awards.
The village has a 51 bed care home providing nursing and dementia care, 60 village centre apartments and 40 village apartments. Due to the success of the village, work has now started on the final phase of 34 village apartments, and is due for completion by Autumn 2012.
The unrivalled facilities include a lakeside restaurant, arts & crafts room, library, IT facilities, bowling green, landscaped gardens and nature reserve. At the entrance to the retirement village is a thatched lodge which has been converted to a village shop and café.

About Richmond Villages
The first Richmond village was established in Nantwich, Cheshire in 1994 and was one of the first retirement villages in the UK. Today, there are five Richmond villages with more in the pipeline.
Richmond Villages is considered a market leader for quality and service within the retirement village sector having won numerous prestigious awards including the Best Retirement Development in the What House? Awards, Daily Telegraph Best Assisted Living, Daily Mail Best Retirement Development, Daily Express New Homes Garden Gold Award for Retirement Developments, to name just a few.
Richmond understands that social interaction and physical and mental activity are vital to a happy and fulfilling later life. Its villages are designed to allow residents easy access to a range of facilities, services and social activities with the reassurance of on site care and support if required.
The villages provide three types of accommodation, from large two bedroom apartments offering an independent lifestyle, to 24-hour nursing and dementia care. The key element is for people to retain as much independence and choice as possible, whilst helping them retain their ‘zest for life’.
Typical village accommodation
Care bedrooms
The large en-suite care bedrooms are located in the care home within the village centre building, and provide nursing and dementia care. The care home also has its own restaurant and lounges, but the advantage of a Richmond care home over a conventional nursing home is that it is situated within the heart of a social, stimulating community with a wealth of things going on.
Village centre apartments
These apartments are situated within the main village centre building and are designed to help people maintain their independence. Apartments include lounge, kitchenette and en-suite bedroom. To take away the daily chores, these apartments come with an ‘Independent Living Package’ which includes all food, daily cleaning, laundry and utilities, meaning you can spend more time doing the things you want to do and maintain your independence. Personal care packages are available from Richmond’s own on-site domiciliary care team.
Village apartments
Feedback from current residents is that they want large living spaces, but fewer bedrooms. For this reason, village apartments are large one or two bedroom apartments comprising a fully fitted kitchen, large lounge, master bedroom with en-suite and second bedroom, most with en-suite. Again, personal care can be provided by Richmond’s domiciliary care team.
